About Carole
Born and raised in Dallas, Texas, Carole Schaefers moved to New Orleans, Louisiana to attend college at the (now defunct) St. Mary's Dominican College in Uptown New Orleans. She received a B.A. in Studio Art with a concentration in Painting and Drawing. Her primary instructors there were the late Lorraine Shay, the late Angela Gregory and Jack Gates, currently Professor Emeritus at Indiana State University. After graduating she worked in the food and beverage industry for many years. During that time she studied ceramic sculpture at Loyola University, and jewelry repair/jewelry making at what was then Delgado Community College. Severe asthma curtailed her work in those areas. Later she briefly studied stone carving with renowned sculptor Gyuri Hollosy, which influenced her approach to three-dimensional art. Other health issues curtailed the stone work. She then returned to an earlier passion for songwriting and performing music at some of the local folk venues.
In 1992 Carole independently produced a CD of a mixture of original and cover music. Entitled Mission, it reflected her affinity with the Spiritual Traditions of the Sicangu Lakota people in South Dakota. The following year she moved to that locale, undergoing major changes in both lifestyle and self-awareness.
In 1996 Carole made the best decision of her life when she married Vine Good Shield. Through this marriage she became an instant grandmother, and is now a great-grandmother. She loves her grand-children and great-grand-children, and the nieces and nephews she has gained, very much.
In 2003 Carole began working at Sinte Gleska University in Mission, South Dakota. During her years there she has taught Digital Photography and other courses. She also has been rediscovering the visual arts, and has rededicated herself to the pursuit of those passions which never faded. During her years at SGU Carole has studied Painting (with Margaret MacKichan), Monotype (with Roger Broer), Batik (with Linda Szabo), and Ceramics (with Ned Day). In 2006 Vine and Carole moved to a small ranch in the country, where she has pursued her passion for horses as well. Carole's renewed devotion to the visual arts has been a homecoming that has greatly enriched her own existence, and we trust will enrich yours.
